After BJ shocked the world by stripping the “unbeatable” Matt Hughes of his belt, Penn got into a contract dispute with the UFC and eventually relinquished his title despite the fact that he had never officially lost it. This was a battle for the vacant welterweight title between the two best pound for pound fighters in MMA.
BJ claimed he had gotten burnt out on training; running in the morning and training at night didn’t work for him, so he trained leisurely. That proved to be his downfall against the cardio-freak Hughes. Penn dominated him for 2 rounds and nearly finished the fight via Triangle choke at the end of round 2. Penn was gassed to start round 3 and Hughes had his way with him.
It was later revealed that Penn sustained a serious rib injury in round 2, but chose to continue anyway, showing his heart in the loss.
